The Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR) first stood up on 6 April 2005 following the publication of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) New Chapter in July 2002. The Regiment was formed to meet a growing worldwide demand for special reconnaissance capability and formed part of the defence contribution to the Government’s comprehensive strategy to counter international terrorism.

Its Operators, enlisted from all branches of the Armed Forces, face extreme risk and live with constant pressure.

“The Special Reconnaissance Regiment has been formed to meet a growing worldwide demand for special reconnaissance capability……Due to the specialist nature of the unit, it will be part of the UK special forces group.”

The Secretary of State for Defence (Mr Geoffrey Hoon), 5 Apr 20051

The Special Reconnaissance Regimental Association (SRRA) was renamed in 2012. Its predecessor was first registered as a charity following the amalgamation of two regimental funds into a more holistic body.

From the beginning, the primary objective of the charity was to support serving and former serving Operators of the SRR by providing tangible help for individuals and their immediate families.

The wider remit of the SRRA is to promote regimental cohesion and, most importantly, support its Operators from badging to burial.
